ARE YOU IN LOVE WITH THE SEA?

'Conservation only works if you fall in love with the sea'. Inspired by the life and legacy of Jacques Mayol, #MyBlue aims to raise awareness about our connection to the ocean and the need to protect it. The campaign is based on our personal, lifelong relationship with the sea, the emotions it brings to us, the beauty of the underwater world and the effects of water on our body and soul.

#MyBlue is a collaboration between ARTEWWF Greece, the European documentary network Moving DocsGreek Travel Pages and Anemon, under the auspices of the Greek Tourism Organisation.

The campaign runs on social media, in parallel to the release of the documentary Dolphin Man on ARTE and the Dolphin Man VR series on arte.tv/arte360 (available since September 25th).

#MyBlue is also supported by a growing number of businesses which embrace ocean conservation and engages a global community of freedivers, conservationists, photographers, swimmers and blue activists to celebrate the beauty of the sea!

DIMITRIS KARAVELLAS

WWF Greece General Manager

"The sea gives life all around the world. And whenever we agree on the measures to adopt and we start protecting some areas, the marine ecosystems recover. The oceans can continue giving life to us if we take care of them."

MEHGAN HEANEY-GRIER

Conservationist & Freediving Champion, USA

"As a people, as a society, we have gotten so far away from nature. You get on that treadmill and then you stop and take a step back and realise that you're having a huge nature deficit. Especially with our kids, we have this opportunity to find an equilibrium, to seek out that nature, and bring that back into our lives."

ALEXIS DUVIVIER

Apnea Champion, France

"When I dive, I get a few minutes cut off from the exterior world. It’s the silence, the discovery of the sea and the life it carries… it’s pure happiness. It’s that freedom of having a few minutes to yourself."

HIGHLIGHTS

AUTHENTIC BIG BLUE

AMORGOS REVISITED

Amorgos Island revives the unique and mythical movie “Le Grand Bleu” by organizing a free-diving event, 30 years after the film's release.

Hosted on the island of Amorgos, the first international competition Authentic Big Blue took place in September 2017 and is planned to be staged annually.

Alongside the main free-diving event, Amorgos hosts a gastronomy festival, so athletes, guests, fans and the public can experience the flavors of the local Greek products and cuisine and showcase the nation’s culinary skills.

PHOTOGRAPHERS

Meet the photographers who are shaping the way we look at the sea.

What inspires them? How do they inspire us?

MIKE BARTICK

MIKE BARTICK

The tranquility and busy finesse of mother nature is never more evident and in tune then in the ocean. Our oceans are really the barometer for all living subjects on the planet, we owe so much to it but do so little for it in return. I’ve always had the good fortune of living near the coast and now right on the water. I dive aprx. 20 days a month and enjoy seeing the changes of the seasons, underwater. I love the open ocean just as much as i do the smaller subjects.

SMOKEY THE FROG

SMOKEY THE FROG

I love the small benthic animals that live on the substrate. They have enormous challenges for survival as they don’t have the ability to flee their predators. These small but capable subjects must hunt, reproduce and proliferate in a world that is hostile at all times.

A LARVAL LIONFISH

A LARVAL LIONFISH

This photo was shot in Northwest Bali near the Mimpi Channel while drifting in the open ocean at night. Blackwater diving connects me with the ocean by allowing me to explore and drift with the current. The feeling of being small in such a large environment can be intimidating and exciting at the same time. Discovering the unique larval subjects that survive as planktons prior to settling on the sea floor is a one of kind experience.

SEA NETTLES

SEA NETTLES

A “Smack” of sea nettles drifting through the shallow coastal water’s of Monterey Bay, California. Diving with sea nettles is quite interesting, drifting along with them in the open ocean with them surrounding you at all times, pulsing and flowing. The experience is unique and one of a kind.

SEAN SCOTT

SEAN SCOTT

My work would probably be non existent if it wasn’t for the ocean. I originally got into photography because of my passion for surfing and I wanted to express the beauty I saw in the ocean. I found photography a great way to share this.

DAAN VERHOEVEN

DAAN VERHOEVEN

"The sea represents a paradox to me: both a home and a completely alien place, as familiar as my own salty tears and as strange as my dreams. Though i do parts of my work underneath her surface, she never feels like an office, but often like a playground, sometimes like a battle zone. She gives life and joy as easily as she takes lives and efforts carelessly. She represents to me something much greater than me, and the honour to be part of that, of her, sometimes when we dive."

"I was born and raised near the sea. The sea fed me and made me who I am today. I became a photographer have been photographing the sea, which has provided me a living. Most importantly, the sea has taught me the true relationship between human and nature."
